Abstract:

This collective monograph builds upon the authors’ long-term research dedicated to the evolution of the Ukrainian language, previously published in the monographs “Dynamic Processes in the Modern Ukrainian Lexicon” (2008) and “The Impact of Social Changes on the Development of the Ukrainian Language” (2017). The book investigates the cognitive and communicative factors driving the formation of functional-stylistic groups of linguistic units (idioms). These processes reflect broader trends of formal-semantic stratification and functional-stylistic differentiation within the system and structure of the Ukrainian language at the beginning of the 21st century. The specific manifestations of these tendencies are analyzed across various lexical-grammatical and lexical-derivational categories, thematic groups, and lexical  paradigms within both general and professional lexicons. Furthermore, the study explores the dynamic interaction between usage (usus), idiolects, and sociolects, alongside the evolution of lexical and word-formation norms.

Centered on the phenomenon of functional-stylistic differentiation, the monograph validates the primary hypothesis that such differentiation within the lexicon and grammar—when codified and fixed in orthography—significantly enhances the language’s overall communicative capacity. The analysis of texts representing various functional styles and sociolinguistic domains reveals how they actively and rapidly generate functional-stylistic variants of neutral nominations and expressions. These texts, incorporating specific word categories with distinct pragmatic functions, demonstrate unique advantages and structural features in forming and utilizing types of designation. Ultimately, examining the composition and structure of individual functional-stylistic idioms (sublanguages), which emerged or were substantially updated during the decades of Ukraine’s independence, confirms the initial hypothesis. The findings prove that functional-stylistic differentiation effectively expands the linguistic repertoire of modern Ukrainian society, seamlessly accommodating a diverse and complex spectrum of speakers’ intentions, stylistic tastes, and communicative preferences.
